Background
Three years ago I graduated from film school and embarked on a journey to volunteer in Tanzania, East Africa. During the 2 years I lived in Tanzania, I fell in love with African culture, learned how to speak Swahili, and made friendships that will last a lifetime. But I also learned about how little we Americans know about the cycle of poverty, ignorance, and lack of medical infrastructure that allow HIV/AIDS to proliferate in Africa at such an alarming rate. Consequently, many of my friends have died of AIDS.

Mission
I'm making this documentary because I deeply love Tanzania and its people. Tanzanians are wise, welcoming, and joy-filled people who have so much to teach us. However, AIDS threatens to destroy their lives and the beauty of their culture. Together we can help them get the tools they need to help stop AIDS.

African Voice
In America and Europe, we constantly look at AIDS through a distorted lens. Our media paints the Westerner as the expert hero with all the answers, and Africa as the incapable victim. Instead, Africans need to be listened to because they are really the ones that should be speaking for themselves.

The Answer
The answer to the problem of global AIDS will not be solved by scholars in ivory towers, but by people who are willing to live and work in solidarity with those most affected by AIDS. When we give Africans the opportunity to speak, we will begin to understand how to stop the AIDS pandemic in Africa and throughout the world.
